The Australian, 110226, Europe learned the hard way when they were forced to rely on global spot LNG prices in 2022. The same happened in California when domestic gas supplies were restricted. Rolling blackouts occured and wholesale power prices spiked. Gas provides the firming that helps us when the sun goes down and/or the wind stops. Australia is not short of gas but regulatory restrictions are the problem. Batteries handle hours whereas gas provides days and weeks of power. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) states that gas fired power will grow strongly in the 2030s. Victoria, where 80% of the population rely on gas need gas for households and industry. If domestic gas is shut down, it will be hard to restart it.
